1931 LEICA I (Model A) + ELMAR F/3.5 5cm LENS, BAKELITE CAP, CASE, BROCHURES, NR. CAMERA APPEARS TO BE IN WORKING ORDER, TOP STRIPPED FOR REPAINT. Camera was part of a large lifetime collection by two Leica enthusiasts , a husband and wife. All their equipment came with written notes on nearly every piece. The two notes on this particular camera are included with the sale. One note shown in the photographs. The notes include thoughts on the serial number, which is written on the chassis. Quite small, so it’s a little difficult to read. It’s a 5-digit number, and I’m pretty sure it’s 67274, but it could be 67217. The “7” numbers appear to be crossed on the downstroke, European style. Not sure why the top was stripped, but it’s smooth, paintless, and ready to be repainted. You can find instructions for doing this online, and I believe there are also a few repair shops which offer it as a service. Or it could be left “as is”. Or even used for parts. Leica I (Model A) All paint removed from body top. Serial number also removed along with the paint, but you can just make out where it was. However, number appears to be recorded inside the camera on the chassis (looks like 67247, 1931). Top plate furniture generally excellent, except VF is marked with crosshairs. Vulcanite very good also, looks original, a couple of very minor repairs only, no hollow spots or loose sections. Base paint in VERY clean condition, almost no marks, may be a later baseplate as catch is chrome not nickel. Film take-up spool a little hard to remove but does come out. 5cm f/3.5 Elmar (no number, so pre-1932) is well-used, barrel is brassed and a little loose-fitting but does lock into place. Minor marks on front edges. Lens not dismounted from body but looks reasonably clear, mainly a little dust and some minor cleaning marks on front. Iris works fine, focus is free but could probably use a lube. Bakelite cap near mint, no cracks. Case looks prewar, well-made, but not sure it’s Leitz, logo and interior look non standard. Needs 1/4 adaptor in order to screw onto body baseplate. 1936 Manual is a reprint, new, still in shrink wrap.
