1931 LEICA I (Model C, Standardized) + 5cm f/3.5 ELMAR, FOFER RF, RED BOX, PERIOD DRGM CASE + 1931 LEITZ LITERATURE. WORKING WELL, OUTSTANDING ORIGINAL EARLY’30s LEITZ OUTFIT. What you might have walked out of the camera store with in 1932. The Standardized 1931 Leica I Model C (not to be confused with the later 1949 Leica Ic), was the first fully interchangeable-lens Leica outfit essentially writing a new chapter in photographic history. The lens mount to film plane distance was standardized, so you could use any Leitz lens on any body. This is confirmed by a small “0” engraved on the lens flange and the lens itself both present on this outfit. Production ran from 1931 to 1933, and a total of only 7,231 were produced. This compares with 56,548 Leica I Model A with Elmars, so the Leica I, Model C Standardized is not an especially common Leica. 1931 LEICA I, MODEL C, Export Version, #59427. Base engraving in English, “Germany” engraved on side of viewfinder, small tripod mount. Nickel, in very clean condition generally & appears to be fully working. Shutter sounds good at all speeds, blinds are in great shape, wind-on is light and precise , the way it should be. Viewfinder bright and clear. Feels like it may have had a CLA within the last few years. Cosmetically, top is very nice, good paint, no retouching, just a few edge markings and small marks, while the bottom shows more wear, see photo. Nickel plating is generally excellent. I can see that the vulcanite body cover has had some repair, both back and front, but it is the correct, original pattern and seems firmly attached, no hollow spots. 1932 5cm f/3.5 ELMAR #124228, in feet, is the early, uncommon version with the focus stop at 11 o’clock. Focus and iris operate normally, iris just a trifle stiff but still perfectly useable, no wear or oil on blades. Front lens glass has some cleaning marks, and just a trace of haze against bright light. Lens barrel has some brassing, but it’s not too evident. The Leitz yellow filter is perfect, and with the original Leitz box. Fits 3.5, 5, 9, 10.5 and 13.5cm Leitz lenses of this period. The FOFER LARGE-DIAL RF #8564, in feet (built for use with the 13.5cm lens) shows a little cosmetic wear but is working well. Dial is in lovely condition. Appears accurate, with good second image. The 1930s DRGM CASE was well made originally and is still in pretty good shape, except for the strap, which is a little weak. These German-made cases were sometimes used for early Leicas, and the earliest DRGM cases are now very collectible (and expensive). The LEITZ Series I RED BOX is brilliant, one of the best I’ve ever seen, mainly just a little wear to the gold lettering, and a very small 1/2 tear on the lid edge. The April 1932 Brochure, 24 pages, & June’32 Price List are, truthfully, probably rarer than the camera itself. Both in excellent condition, and are complete period pieces. Outfit also comes with a Leitz Cartridge and Cartridge Case , both in good condition, and a generic modern body and rear lens cap (plastic).
