1938 LEICA IIIb, Export, with 1933 HEKTOR 7.3cm, f 1:9. Both body and lens CLA’d. With 1945-49 early VIOOH FINDER, 3 CASES, 3 CAPS, 2 PERIOD BROCHURES. This camera came to me from St. Julians in Malta, a town just north of Valetta, where it appears to have been during the Seige of Malta by Italy and Germany, 1940-42. I believe it may have used by the island’s administration to document people (including prisoners of war), and wartime damage, which was extensive. The 1938-39 IIIb body may have come via Great Britain, as it’s an export model (baseplate in English). The family story was that Hektor 7.3cm lens was confiscated from a captured naval or submarine commander , but the only person who might confirm this has, unfortunately, passed away. The VIOOH Finder is 1945 – 49, so that was added then. The case is probably mid-1950s I think. So one operator/owner for about 70 years or so! 1938- 1939 IIIb BODY #289169 is the last of the true Barnack Leicas, before the longer IIIc was introduced. It had a CLA in 2012 & is in above average condition. No dings, some light brightmarks & small marks on the top and edges. Baseplate shows a little more wear than top, but fits well with a smooth lock. Vulcanite is a good deep black and firmly attached. RF clear and reasonably bright, with clip-on color filter, VF brilliant. With chrome body cap, repo. Wind-on is smooth and even. Shutter sounds good and accurate, and blinds looks great. However, slow speeds are inconsistent – probably need just an adjustment not a full CLA. Leitz leather case/strap in great shape, near mint, probably 1950s. Leitz HEKTOR 7.3cm f1:9 #166093 (meters) shows light use, mainly on the black areas. This is the less common chrome version, the best looker I think, and the chrome is excellent. CLA’d in 2012, glass is clear, maybe a trace of haze under a very bright light, plus a little dust, a few very light cleaning marks, and the usual bubbles in the glass. Focus and iris smooth, just a trace of oil on the shutter blades. Cap shows a couple of small marks. No hood, but the late-style Summarit XOONS hood with clamping screw will fit. Still capable of producing memorable images – at 146mm, of course – and you can mount it on your digital interchangeable-lens camera with a couple of adaptors. VIOOH finder (also meters) shows a lot of paint wear, some haze & a small crack to the prism, lower left, gone by f7.3. It is still perfectly functional, though. 1936 Catalog a new reprint, still wrapped, and the Leitz March 1939 Price List is original. Great shape except for a mark across the cover.
