LEITZ TIME CAPSULE WARTIME LEICA IIIb OUTFIT, 3 LEITZ LENSES, VIDOM, +1939 FILM
VERY ORIGINAL 1939-40 LEICA EXPORT OUTFIT THAT WAS NEVER, IN FACT, EXPORTED. This is an export model made in late 1939 or early 1940 that was never in fact exported, due to the outbreak of war in September 1939. (Ownership of Leica cameras and Leitz lenses was restricted, as they were an important part of the war effort, especially for the Luftwaffe). After Germany surrendered in 1945, many Germans were desperate, with food short, and their homes, towns and cities destroyed. This camera was bought by a U. Intelligence officer who was on active duty in the U. Zone just after the war. According to his daughter, it cost him 200 cigarettes. UNCOMMON WORLD WAR 2 SURVIVOR in EXCELLENT CONDITION. This one has survived. Case contents are all contemporaneous, i. Mid-to-late 1930s, even including an unused roll of film that expired in March 1939! Everything matches – the years made; chrome lenses, chrome body; export body, lenses and VF marked in feet. And everything is worn to about the same degree – i. Part of the fun of cases like these, of course, is to complete the collection by searching out the missing filters, close-up lenses, etc. 1939 LEICA IIIb EXPORT MODEL #335443. (“Open” & “Close” on baseplate in English). Very lightly used Leica IIIb, last of the true Barnack Leica bodies. Chrome, chrome body cap (repro). In outstanding original condition, near mint, not modified, upgraded or messed with. A little brassing on the accessory holder, one small edge mark and some small marks on the baseplate. Vulcanite is perfect, solid and deep black, no hollow spots. 1/2 sec, 1 sec & T speeds hang up, others good. Clear VF, strong RF second image, smooth wind-on. Shutter release is Japan-made, works, nice condition. 1937 f/3.5 5cm ELMAR #358253. Base & chrome Leitz lens cap. Close to mint, just a trace of haze, no cleaning marks, uncoated, working well. 1938 f/4.0 9cm ELMAR #455830 base & Bakelite Leitz lens cap. Shows just a little more cosmetic wear, but is still in excellent shape, just a whisper of haze, uncoated, working well. F/4.5 13.5cm HEKTOR #241157 base & lens cap (both repro). Lovely black body, almost unmarked, small brassed area on the chrome (between 8′ and 10′). A trace of haze, no other marks I can see, uncoated, working well. 1933 WINTU right-angled finder, with a fold-down prism that enables use of the rangefinder. You can’t mount it on top of the viewfinder, of course… That’s just a liberty I took to get the WINTU in the shots. Mint – unmarked black paint, clear brilliant image, no haze. In black, this is a Hove R5 on their Rarity Scale – “Rare – available once per year”. 1937-39 VIDOM finder, chrome, feet, late’30s. Works well, smooth, lovely cosmetics, slight haze but still perfectly useable. 3.5, 5, 7.3, 9, 10.5, 13.5cm. Case, about1937, near mint, best prewar case I’ve ever seen , inside and out. Even has its key. AGFA FILM Expired March 1939! Oldest unused 35mm film I personally have ever come across. I did not open the film roll. 2 Kodak film containers, one roll of Plus-X, unused. LEITZ LITERATURE Original Lenses and Accessories brochures (with Price List), show wear but are all there. 1936 Leica Catalogue is a repro, new, still in its wrapping. VALUE A little hard to say, it’s so unusual to find original outfits like this these days. I have seen outfits like this one. In the Westlicht auctions.
