The Aires V 35mm camera is an exceptionally solid camera, brass and chrome. Its fast normal lens offers a mximum f/1.5 aperture. An Aires lens cap is included. The camera has shutter speeds of Bulb plus 1 to 1/400. Closest focus is 2′ 8. There is a PC terminial for flash. The seleniuim meter cell no longer functions, typical of a circa 1958 meter. The camera has a behind-the-lens shutter, so lenses are fully interchangable. Besides the standard seven element, four group 45mm lens Aires made a 5 element 3 group 100mm f/3.5 telephoto and a 4 element 3 group 35mm f/3.2 wide angle lenses. The lens mount is a bayonet allowing quick and easy lens switches. One can override the camera’s double-exposure prevention via the “D” setting on the dial to the right of the rangefinder window. The viewfinder is a bit cloudy but there is still sharp contrast with the overall image and the center rangefinder spot. The finder shows illuminated frame lines for the 45 and 100mm lenses, with the full viewfinder image covering the 35mm lens’s field of view. Despite the camera’s overall beautiful appearance I grade it as only Excellent due to the cloudy viewfinder and the stubborn stains on the camera bottom. Since the photos were taken, I used GooGone to improve but not completely eliminate the bottom stains. The Aires V is a classic from the golden age of rangefinder cameras with an excellent high speed lens at a cost that is only a fraction of a vintage Leica, Canon or Nikon.
