Aires V rangefinder camera with interchageable 45mm f/1.5 lens
The Aires V 35mm camera is an exceptionally solid camera, brass and chrome. Its fast normal lens offers a mximum f/1.5 aperture. An Aires lens cap is included. The camera has shutter speeds of Bulb plus 1 to 1/400. Closest focus is 2′ 8. There is a PC terminial for flash. The seleniuim meter cell no longer functions, typical of a circa 1958 meter. The camera has a behind-the-lens shutter, so lenses are fully interchangable. Besides the standard seven element, four group 45mm lens Aires made a 5 element 3 group 100mm f/3.5 telephoto and a 4 element 3 group 35mm f/3.2 wide angle lenses. The lens mount is a bayonet allowing quick and easy lens switches. One can override the camera’s double-exposure prevention via the “D” setting on the dial to the right of the rangefinder window. The viewfinder is a bit cloudy but there is still sharp contrast with the overall image and the center rangefinder spot. The finder shows illuminated frame lines for the 45 and 100mm lenses, with the full viewfinder image covering the 35mm lens’s field of view. Despite the camera’s overall beautiful appearance I grade it as only Excellent due to the cloudy viewfinder and the stubborn stains on the camera bottom. Since the photos were taken, I used GooGone to improve but not completely eliminate the bottom stains. The Aires V is a classic from the golden age of rangefinder cameras with an excellent high speed lens at a cost that is only a fraction of a vintage Leica, Canon or Nikon. A quality Japanese Rangefinder 35mm, that came to market at the wrong time, just as SLR’s were getting popular. It has a built-in meter. The Normal lens is the 45 mm, f/1.5 (I believe Aires offered two choices of normal lens, this is the one that cost more); also has 35 mm f/3.2 wide angle and 100mm f/3.5, each with lens cap and body cap and lens hood. Has original manual and case (BUT the case is very damaged). All the glass looks clear with no scratches on either the front or back elements. The shutter advance lever sticks occasionally but is not a problem and the shutter seems to function correctly (I have no way to actually check the accuracy). The build in meter needle responds to light, accuracy unknown. The rangefinder split image does not appear to function. A small piece of leatherette is missing on the front left of the photographer The leatherette to the right of the lens mount appears to have been re-glued. The camera does not show significant wear and seems to be a fine example of this solid metal constructed camera.
