Ensign Autorange 220 film camera (Used, Fixable Issues)
I have not film-proven this camera. Manufactured: 1945 – 1947 (Post-war production was with Epsilon/Prontor shutters). Lens: Ensar Anastigmat 75 mm f/4.5. Shutter: Epsilon 1-250 BT. Film: 120 roll film. Frame: 2¼ x 2¼ inch. Cosmetically attractive condition, with minor scuffing but none of the metal corrosion seen in some other units. Lens: good condition, no fungus evident. Shutter: timing sounds grossly appropriate for shutter setting. Bellows: no obvious holes. Lens door: opens promptly and smoothly, latches securely. Rangefinder: Coupled and remains operational. Shutter: action sticking mid-cycle on longer exposure settings. This is very likely due to loss of lubrication or accumulation of some grime, and would probably be resolved with a Clean-Lubricate-Adjust maintenance service. Shutter linkage: The mechanical linkage between the shutter button and the leaf shutter trigger frequently slips and decouples, causing failure of the linkage. This may be repairable with adjustment. Rangefinder: Rangefinder patch is dim, with low contrast. This seems to be a common issue with these cameras as they age. I have not verified calibration. The Ensign Autorange 220 was a reasonably high-end, coupled rangefinder medium format film camera from the United Kingdom. I have found it to be a remarkably compact and pleasing camera to use, with a nice feel in the hand. This particular unit deserves a proper Clean-Lubricate-Adjust maintenance service, and would probably be a decent camera if this was done. However, these are difficult to find for folding rangefinders nowadays. In particular, the sticking shutter action needs a CLA to allow more reliable shutter operation above about 1/10. I have not attempted to photograph with this camera. All the best and enjoy your shopping. This item is in the category “Cameras\Vintage Movie & Photography\Vintage Cameras\Rangefinder Cameras”.
